Prime Minister Erna Solberg (H) is confident that they will find solutions to make CO2 cleanup and storage plans a reality. The government is now allocating more than NOK 2 billion for carbon capture and storage in next year’s state budget.
The Prime Minister’s statement came during the national Young Conservatives gathering on Saturday. Conservatives refer to it as the biggest climate investment of all time for Norwegian industry on a state budget.
– This is a great technology project for Norway. It was important for me to be able to tell Unge Høyre that we are now committing to a green transition, Solberg tells NTB.

The FRP came out earlier this week and said they will not support the government’s plan to capture and store CO2.
It came a few days after Prime Minister Erna Solberg launched the “Langskip” project, where NOK 17.1 billion will be invested to clean CO2 at Norcem’s cement factory in Brevik and transport it for storage under the seabed in the North Sea.
They are also open to Fortum’s incineration plant at Klemetsrud in Oslo to purify their CO2 emissions.
– Now we embark on a long journey, said Solberg.

But the FRP will try to stop that journey. Solberg says this about how they will get on the trip anyway.
– I do not perceive that Frp is in principle against the project, but that they want to keep costs low. That’s how we are. We will enter into dialogue with them. We get a lot of signals from key FRP members across the country that they think this is a very important project. Then we will see.

– What if they say no?
– Thus, first we go to Frp to investigate if they support us on the budget and on various issues. If they don’t want it, we turn to others to gain support on important issues.
– Could it end with a vote in the Storting on the state budget, where the FRP does not support you and you do not get a majority?
– We have promoted “Langskip” as a separate proposal to be considered in the Storting, for which we believe there is a majority. It is true that money is also needed from the state budget. I think we will find solutions. CO2 purification and storage is very important to us, both for the sake of the climate and to achieve our climate goals, but also because there is a great opportunity to take a leadership role in the development of a green technology, which can generate new green jobs. .

She adds:
– When we have decided to start such a large project, I am sure that we will find solutions that allow it to be carried out. I perceive that there is a lot of will for this project in the Storting, so I think it will be the purification and the storage of CO2.
