On Friday, news of US President Donald Trump’s positive coronation test struck like lightning. But whether that lightning bolt comes from clear skies or not, people disagree – at least the NRK Americans gathered in the US capital, Washington, DC.
– I think for many it is a kind of retaliation that Donald Trump was one of the first, you know, great people, at least in the current election campaign, who contracted the virus. “I think the country is waiting to see what happens to him and if he recovers,” said Michael Pannatary.
But he’s also excited about how this will affect both people’s choices and attitudes toward the virus.
– Trump may have taken the virus less seriously than on the other side of politics. Many people will probably think and believe that the virus is less serious if Trump recovers from this.

– A manufactured weapon
Others do not take the crown situation so seriously.
– I think everyone will get a crown, then you become immune. I think we are too afraid of something that is not very deadly, says Scott Peters.
– Has the coronavirus become a political issue in the United States?
– It has become a political issue, yes. In the highest degree. As Trump said; this is a chinese virus that was created there. He’s been sent here to hurt our economy, and he definitely has. We must overcome the choice and return to our normal life.

– So you think the virus was created by man?
– yes! It is a natural virus that became a weapon to harm the United States.
Belief in face masks
The use of masks has been a highly debated measure in the United States.
As recently as the first debate between President Trump and Democratic candidate Biden, the topic was a mouthful.
Then Trump mocked Biden for wearing a mask all the time. People realized this when the president became infected almost two days later.
Several of the Americans that NRK met on Friday also pointed to the bandages as a good move.
– I believe in the use of facial masks and that everyone should use it. Trump and his entourage have not done well. But I hope he and the first lady recover, says a lady wearing a face mask.

– Well, I thought Trump hadn’t used a bandage. And they are important, as we see. They are important, says Michelle Owens.

– Do you think Trump is infected will affect the elections?
– I do not know. I just hope that we can be together and get back together. Once we were a great country.
While others are sure it will have consequences.
– I think the question now that you have the virus and we just had the first debate is: Will Joe (Biden) get it? Then we will see then. But I think it will affect the elections in one way or another, we’ll see.
Trump has endured some criticism for not taking the coronavirus seriously. For example, he has held several election campaign meetings where infection control has not exactly been first on the agenda.

– Global vulnerability
Trump’s corona infection has received a lot of international attention, also here in Norway.
– When I first heard that I was infected, I thought that shows how vulnerable we are globally. But this is also ironic. It has been neglected. It will be interesting to see how both parties react in the coming days, says Lisa Cooper, former chair of the Democrats Abroad Norway board.
Whereas one of the alibis of the republicans in this country takes it all in stride.
– I think we’ll be back to normal in a couple of days, says Vincent Baugh, vice chairman of the Republican Board of Overseas Republicans.
– Don’t you think this will affect the electoral campaign?
– To be honest, I don’t think so. When this happens, we will say that you have had the virus and move on.
But Cooper believes it will have a clear impact on the election.
– Handling Covid is the Democrats’ first priority, we will see the results of that in the run-up to the election campaign. How the authorities have handled the virus, or rather; lack of handling, says Cooper.
Baugh believes that it is important not to focus only on the coronavirus.
– But what about the American people? Korona is not everything. The president is just a man, a lot of other things are happening that one should also focus on. And the most important of all is; What will happen to the American economy?
– Yes, but then you forgot the most important thing. How you handle this affects how you can reopen and therefore what will happen to the economy.
