– I think we can continue. Our greatest enemy is obviously the coronavirus. We must ensure that everyone remains healthy and able to do our jobs.
That’s what Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said on a US radio show on Friday.
According to Reuters, McConnell believes there is nothing in the way of the Senate confirming Amy Coney Barrett as the new Supreme Court Justice. This is despite the fact that President Donald Trump has tested positive for COVID-19.
The news has raised concerns that more people in the US state apparatus may be infected.
According to White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, Trump has only mild symptoms and the president will continue to do his job.
– Full speed forward
The Senate Legal Committee is scheduled to begin hearings on Barrett’s nomination to the Supreme Court on October 12.
– He’s at full speed. This is what the committee’s chairman, Lindsey Graham, told Reuters.
According to Graham, the Senate plan was the first thing Trump asked Friday morning.
It is Trump who nominated Amy Coney Barret as the new Supreme Court Justice.
He was tested for covid-19 after being in contact with the president last Saturday. His test was negative.
It must be approved by the Senate.
The nomination is Trump’s third to the United States Supreme Court.
By electing Barrett, an already conservative right will go even further to the right. Because Supreme Court justices sit for life and decide on highly political issues, Trump can help shape American politics for many decades to come.
If Barrett is approved by the Senate, he will give the Conservatives on the Supreme Court a 6-3 majority.
The appointment of judges to the Supreme Court is considered the most important legacy of a presidency.
On Saturday, there is one month left until the US elections on November 3. This means that there is little time for the Republican majority to approve its candidate before Election Day.
