– I have received information from various sources, but I cannot confirm it one hundred percent. He is said to have died last night in a hospital in Germany, Patrick Lundevall-Unger, a lawyer and leader of the Martine Foundation, tells Dagbladet.

Lundevall-Unger says that the death of Abdulhak’s elders, if the information is correct, has important implications for the son.

– You will lose a lot of protection. Much depends on the role you may play in your father’s business empire, says the foundation’s leader.

Among the richest in Yemen

Shaher Abdulhak is / was among the richest people in Yemen. He is known as the “king of sugar” in his home country and is the sole importer of Mercedes-Benz.

The 82-year-old has also gained great political influence and was a close friend of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

The lawyer says Martin’s father, Odd Petter Magnussen, is aware of the situation.

The London Metropolitan Police (Scotland Yard) is responsible for investigating the Martine case, with Farouk Abdulhak as the sole suspect. Since Yemen does not have an extradition agreement with Great Britain, they cannot or will not extradite their citizen.

– This case does not go away, and it is a priority for us. The suspected crime has no statute of limitations, investigation leader Andrew Partridge told Dagbladet last year during a major press conference at Asker Church, where Martine is buried.

He stressed that the 33-year-old, who is wanted internationally, will be immediately arrested for having a voluntary trip to the UK.

Scotland Yard has always been in close contact with Martin’s family and the Martine Foundation, which has worked tirelessly to see Farouk extradited since the 2008 murder.

– Now we are working to find a way to agree to enroll, said Martin’s father.

Kjell Magne Bondevik, a former prime minister, now director of the Oslo Center for Peace and Human Rights, has also been personally involved in the case.

– I do this out of empathy with the family and the terrible tragedy to which they are exposed. Second, the case illustrates a global problem: that criminals can escape by traveling from one country to another where there is no extradition agreement in the first place, and thus escape.
