On Friday last week, it became clear that the Ringerike District Court is defending residents who have sued the state and the AUF, as construction of the national memorial site in Utøyakaia will be halted. In November, the trial will begin on whether the monument will be built.

Støre believes that a national monument will be important.

– The trial must go its own way, but now many of those most affected in Utøya feel that enough is enough. Many are rightly angry and frustrated. I understand them well. Many terrorist victims are still fighting, and the stubborn torment they experience from the monument is like salt in their wounds, he says.

The neighbors’ lawyer, Ole Hauge Bendiksen, reacts to Støre’s statements and believes that he, as a parliamentary representative, must respect the principle of distribution of power.

– For me, Støre’s statements seem adequate to influence the judiciary. Here a more humble tone should be set and, to a greater extent, express an acknowledgment of the division of power found between politicians and the judiciary.
