(Tottenham 1–1 Chelsea, 5–4 on concentrated penalties) Timo Werner (24) scored his first goal for his new club, but then Erik Lamela ensured there was a penalty shoot-out. José Mourinho was small, but he could encourage the passage to the quarterfinals.
The Portuguese was not very happy that everything went well. Television footage showed him ending up in a mouth-to-mouth fight with his former student, Frank Lampard.
The microphones caught Mourinho thinking that his former general midfielder was making too much noise on the sidelines after taking the lead.
-When you lose 3-0, you are not up here, said Mourinho, among other things.
Before the exciting penalty shootout, however, television footage showed the two holding hands and parting ways.
– With Frank, the most important thing is my feelings for him more than the words we exchange. I will always owe him everything for how he was as a player. For a player, friend and professional, Mourinho told Sky Sports after the game.
On the penalty shoot-out, it was Mason Mount’s penalty that proved fatal. The Chelsea player was the only one who failed.

Werner goal
Chelsea manager Frank Lampard also sent a strong team into the quarter-finals against city rivals Tottenham.
That might say something about the breadth of the light blues when they still made nine changes. Timo Werner and Mateo Kovacic were the only ones to open the league game against West Bromwich.
Experienced defender César Azpilicueta was one of those who rejoined Chelsea’s starting lineup.
At 19 minutes, he found Timo Werner with a great pass, for which the German thanked and bowed.
Characteristically, he put the ball just outside the penalty area, before hitting the near corner behind Spurs captain Hugo Lloris.

Mourinho took Dier to the bathroom
The goalkeeper, along with Eric Dier, was the only Spurs player to start the previous league game.
The latter seemed to incur Mourinho’s frustration. Dier ran to the locker room with Mourinho in tow, before running back out onto the field.
Chelsea had a chance while Dier was in the player’s tunnel.
– I wasn’t so happy, but there wasn’t much I could do. Nature called, Dier tells Sky Sports, where he was named the best player on the field.
– It can be normal when you are completely dehydrated. I knew he had to go, but he was just trying to get it back, “said Mourinho, who praised Dier for the game he played.

Late settlement
At the opposite end, Chelsea’s new goalkeeper, Édouard Mendy, had the opportunity from the start.
He kept the cage clean in his first round for the Dark Blues, but also has midfielder Kurt Zouma to thank for the help.
The young Gedson Fernandes was close to surrounding him and putting the ball into the goal, but a heroic intervention by the French midfielder managed to stop the Portuguese.
After the break, however, came Tottenham’s goal. Seven minutes before the end, Erik Lamela let go and put the tie that ensured that there was a tie at 90 minutes and therefore a penalty shoot-out.
Eric Dier, Erik Lamela, Pierre Højbjerg, Lucas Moura and Harry Kane all scored for Tottenham.
Also Tammy Abraham, César Azpilicueta, Jorginho and Emerson for Chelsea.
But when Mason Mount missed the fifth penalty, Chelsea was out.
