IN EUROPE: Immigrants expect to be transported to mainland Greece on Monday.
Greek police have taken action against what they call a human trafficking ring on the Greek island of Lesbos. They believe that non-governmental organizations are behind this and that Norwegians should be among those involved.
On Monday it emerged that the Greek police had attacked four non-governmental organizations on the Greek island of Lesbos. A total of 35 people connected to the network are suspected in the case. 33 of them will be members of the four organizations.
Among them are Germans, Swiss, French, Bulgarians, Spanish, Austrians and Norwegians.
– After many months of investigation by the Mytilene Security Directorate, the actions of this organized network were identified. They were systematically active in facilitating the illegal entry of foreigners into Greek territory, via the island of Lesbos, police said in a statement quoted by the Greek City Times.
Must have been behind 32 trips
The police statement indicates that the network has been active since June. They are said to have been behind 32 trips to transport more than 3,000 illegal immigrants to Greece.
The police say they have revealed that the network was managed through closed Facebook groups and messages, where information was shared about the place of departure and arrival of the boats.
The people involved are now suspected of having formed and joined a criminal organization, espionage, exchange of state secrets and violations of immigration laws.
They are also suspected of collaborating with organized human trafficking networks.
Greek police informed VG on Tuesday that no one has yet been taken into custody in the case. Beyond that, they don’t want to comment.

New camp established
When VGs was on Lesbos in early September, the Moria camp had just burned to the ground. Thousands of migrants left the camp and settled in the street a few kilometers away. After a few days, a new temporary camp was created.
All of this happened while corona infection was being confirmed among the migrants. The migrants VG spoke to said they had been on the island for a long time and had no access to food or water.
The Greek authorities promised better conditions in the new field.
