Since 7 p.m., there have been no open flames from the production plant, but emergency services cannot establish that they are in control, because they have not been inside or seen, says operations manager Leo Johansen in the Finnmark police district .

He adds that it seems positive.

– Work is underway to bring smoke divers to the place where it began to burn. But it is hot there and demanding, says Johansen at 9:30 pm.

Emergency services will work at the scene throughout the afternoon and evening, he says.

No injuries

Now it’s dark at Hammerfest. On Monday night, Finnmark police reported that the wind direction is favorable, with weak winds from earlier, and that an interruption in the firefighting effort showed no signs of exacerbation.

The fire is confined to a production room in one part of the plant. Three other turbines were close to the turbine, and the police feared that fire could spread towards them. But finally they considered that the danger was significantly weakened.

No injuries were reported.

Equinor Plant

Equinor operates the gas plant. Equinor emergency personnel are trained in these types of emergency incidents and assist emergency services in handling the fire, communications consultant Eskil Eriksen at Equinor tells NTB. Other personnel have been evacuated.

Three ships, two tugs and a supply boat contribute to the extinction from the sea side.

There is a tunnel from the mainland where you can reach the island by car.

The police have introduced a flight ban on the airspace around Melkøya. Therefore, it is not allowed to fly a drone within 5 kilometers.(Terms)Copyright Dagens Næringsliv AS and / or our suppliers.
