The Anangu people demand that their sacred cliff, Ayers Rock in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, be removed from Google Streetview, writes ABC Australia.

According to the newspaper, Google Australia says that they have already fulfilled the wish to remove the images.

– We understand that Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is very sacred to the Anangu people. When we found out about this, we removed the images, says a Google spokesperson.

Ayers Rock has for many years been a popular destination for tourists who have wanted to see Australian wilderness from above, BT writes.

Last year, the Australian authorities chose to close the cliff to tourism. This followed a lawsuit from the Anangu people, who in 1985 took over the cliff’s property.

They call the red rock “Uluru” and consider it sacred. This is also the reason why they now want to remove it from Google Streetview.

According to ABC Australia, the national park administration has asked Google to remove both user-generated panoramic images and streetview images from Google.
