A man in his 30s died after he was shot by police in Notodden township on Tuesday afternoon.
This is confirmed by Police Chief Ole Bredrup Sæverud at Dagbladet.
The incident took place at the disused tourist hotel in Bolkesjø, and the police describe the deceased as previously known.
– tragedy
Notodden Mayor Gry Fuglestveit (AP) tells Dagbladet that contact has been established between the municipality and the police.
– If necessary, our crisis team is ready, he says.
Fuglestveit says that from a mayor’s point of view, this is a very sad incident that she wishes they were without.
– I am very sorry for the relatives. I think it’s a profound tragedy for everyone involved, he tells Dagbladet.
Must have been threatening
At 3:27 p.m., the southeast police district received a message from AMK that a man from the hotel had behaved in a threatening manner towards the people there. The message was also that he seemed to be affected.
On the basis of this report, the police decided to arm themselves and then deemed it “time critical” to gain control of the man, according to the press release.
The police arrived at the scene at 3:51 p.m.
“In the situation that arose during contact with the man, the police fired several shots,” says the press release.
I don’t want to elaborate
Police Chief Sæverud does not want to elaborate on the course of events, or what the man in contact with the police did.
– I can not say anything other than what was the reason we went to the place, he says and points out that the message to the police was threatening.
Furthermore, it says that the relevant police officers are cared for internally, but that they will also be available to the Investigation Office.
– An investigation into the situation is now underway and the Investigations Office is investigating the incident that led to the shooting, says Police Chief Sæverud.
Witness: – Heard shots
An ambulance was in the vicinity of the hotel and quickly released life-saving first aid.
The man’s life could not be saved and he was pronounced dead at 4:35 p.m.
Relatives of the deceased have been notified, according to police.
A witness who was near the scene, tells VG that he only understood that something was happening when he saw the police and the ambulance at the scene.
– Then I heard at least three shots, says the witness.
Dagbladet is following the case.
