NIPH recommends that the country be red. Two French tourists are blamed.
Iceland has done relatively well during the crown crisis. The country has 10 deaths and a total of 2,377 cases of infection. In a June 1 article, The New Yorker magazine was titled “How Iceland Beat the Coronavirus”, and the preface “The country not only flattened the basket, it virtually eliminated it.”
On July 28, two Norwegian professors wrote the post “Can we learn from Iceland’s covid-19 management?” in Aftenposten, where they praised that the country has introduced mandatory testing for all visitors and returnees.
Increased infection
Now the infection is increasing again. On Sunday, the country registered 77 new cases of infection, the highest since April 3, according to WHO figures.

According to Icelandic magazine The Reykjavik Grapevine, two French tourists who visited the country in mid-August are the source of much of the outbreak. They tested positive for the virus and were quarantined. They should not have complied with this.
The country’s pandemic regulations state that anyone who breaks isolation or quarantine rules can be fined between 150,000 and 500,000 ISK, between 10,000 and 35,000 NOK.
Chief epidemiologist Thorolfur Gudnason says according to the Vizier newspaper that all the viral infections in recent days can be traced back to two pubs in downtown Reykjavik. The vast majority of the cases that have occurred are of the same variant of the virus that the two French tourists were diagnosed with in August.
– This French virus, as we might call it, is a bit overwhelming now, Gudnason said at a press conference on Monday this week.
About tourists, he is quiet:
– I have information that it was difficult to get them to follow the instructions they received. I really can’t say more, he says according to Vizier.

Bars in Reykjavik were reopened on May 31, but were closed again on Friday last week as a result of the new outbreak, Morgunbladid reports.

FHI now recommends that the country be red.
According to the institute, the country has had rising infection rates and is now well above the limit of 20 confirmed cases per 100,000 inhabitants (incidence of 14 days) in the last two weeks, with 64.5 infected per 100,000 inhabitants.
Among other things, Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir was praised for offering everyone in the country a free coronation test at an early stage.
In addition to Iceland, FHI recommends that the following countries and regions be in red: Lithuania (23.7), Västerbotten (23.9), Päijänne-Häme (22.9), Central Finland (26.9).
It is the government that decides during the week what type of entry quarantine will apply to which countries and regions. The changes will go into effect at midnight on Saturday, September 26.
