Russia warns of military cooperation with Iran

“New opportunities will arise in our cooperation with Iran after the special regime introduced by Resolution 2231 in the UN Security Council expires on October 18,” Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told Russia on Tuesday. the Interfax news agency.

He adds that the size of the collaboration and what areas are covered is another matter.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in early September that the United States could prevent Iran from buying Chinese tanks and Russian air defense systems when the UN arms boycott expires.

The United States has tried to persuade the UN Security Council to extend the boycott, but without success. The Trump administration has also stated that the UN sanctions against Iran, which were lifted in connection with the 2015 nuclear deal, have been reintroduced. But this is disputed by the other countries that signed the agreement, including the UK, France and Germany.

The United States withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018, so the country has no power to reintroduce UN sanctions, depending on which countries are still party to the deal.

Ryabkov emphasizes that the “illegal” actions of the United States will have no effect on the agreements that Russia will conclude with Iran.
