On Monday, debris from Tropical Storm “Sally” devastated northern Norway and the storm continued well into the night.
Traffic operators at the North Road Traffic Center have had a lot to do until Tuesday night.
– There has been a landslide, a lot of wind, a lot of water, trees at the end and several places where it is winter, says traffic operator Bente Nyland in Vegtrafikksentralen Nord to TV 2.
Ambulance hit by landslide
Just before 2pm, emergency services were notified of a landslide that passed over parts of the E8 at Ramfjord, south of Tromsø.
An ambulance was hit by the landslide, covering parts of the road. The ambulance people did well, but the car could no longer be driven.
The Norwegian Public Roads Administration has decided that the E8 will be closed until Tuesday morning and then a new assessment of the situation will take place.
– It is the main access road to the city of Tromsø, and quite a long detour, so the landslide has consequences, says operations manager Eirik Kileng in the Troms police district on TV 2.
– Wait to drive
When dawn breaks, geologists will conduct an inspection of the landslide site and consider when it is safe to reopen the European road.
– There are three places where it has been and it is the middle of winter now: E6 Saltfjellet, Fylkevsvei 813 Reinshorna and National Highway 77 Graddis, says Nyland.
The storm in the north is still quite devastating. Therefore, the traffic operator has a clear appeal for those who hit the road.
– Can you wait to drive? Stay home and wait for the weather to improve.
Fear more landslides
Veitrafikksentralen Nord has had many telephones on felled trees at night.
– The soil is very saturated with all the precipitation now so it’s easy for there to be landslides and rocks. So when you’re driving, pay close attention and be careful, Nyland says.
He hasn’t finished saying that sentence at 06:30 before the meal begins on a new landslide. This time it is 868 Pollfjellet County Road, on the Lyngseide side of the tunnel opening.
– We don’t have an overview of the scope yet. But people hear it rumbling loudly on the side of the valley, says the traffic operator.
The water level goes down

– The worst has gone north and we’ve been driving with a slight delay since last night, Operations Manager Tommy Bech tells TV 2.

High water levels on Monday caused chaotic conditions in Nordland, especially Beiarn. Several were not allowed to enter their own houses after the Beiarelva river crossed its banks. Now the police have good news for the weather-resistant Northerners.
– The water level drops in the most affected rivers, so a continuous evaluation is made of which roads will be opened throughout the morning, says Bech.
