Jadon Sancho (20) has been one of Manchester United’s main goals in this transfer window. Earlier this summer, it looked like Ole Gunnar Solskjær was well placed in the battle to secure the English star’s shot, but now things are pointing to the 20-year-old remaining at Borussia Dortmund.
Paul Hirst, who works for the acclaimed The Times and has followed Manchester United for many years, comes with little encouraging news to anyone who wants Sancho to go to Old Trafford.
– I don’t think transition will happen. “I would say there is no more than a 15 percent chance that Sancho will sign for Manchester United before the transfer window closes,” Hirst told TV 2.
– Why?
– I think they missed the deal. Not long ago United came out and said personal conditions were in order, but that’s never been the problem. The main problem is the transfer fee. Borussia Dortmund has always been clear that they want 120 million euros. United haven’t looked up so far, and I really don’t think the club has that much money to spend on a player.
ESPN journalist Mark Ogden noted that Solskjær does not appear to exert tremendous pressure either internally or externally to ensure the transition.
– It seems a bit naive on the part of United. 4-5 weeks ago, director Ed Woodward wanted to spend 50 million euros on Sancho. That made Solskjær frustrated. I wanted to drop the embarrassment and just make the deal. But that hasn’t happened, says Ogden.

– Also, it doesn’t seem like Sancho is in a hurry to get away from Dortmund. You know you can have a good season there now and still get the transition you want next summer. Usually the players and the team around them show in different ways that they want to escape, make a little riot, if that’s the case. This has not been the case with Sancho, it does not seem that he will force this transition through death and life. But nothing can be completely ruled out yet.
Although Ogden and Hirst are relatively close in their perception of standing in the Sancho case, they have quite a different view of what to expect from United going forward and what it takes for the season to be considered successful.
– I think United should win a trophy or challenge in the Premier League title match. I don’t think they will win the Premier League, but to show progression I will see that they at least come close to Liverpool and Manchester City. The gap must be closed. Only the first four are not good enough, so Solskjær is in trouble, thinks Ogden.
Hirst disagrees:
– Ed Woodward cannot demand a top two position this season when they have only bought one player so far in Donny van de Beek, who also plays in a position in midfield that United needed at least to get stronger. Look at Chelsea for example, what they have done in the transfer market has given them a huge advantage over competitors like United.
– For the defense of Solskjær, you need to get the players you want to be able to take the club further. At the moment they are sitting on too many players who are not selling and who have huge salaries. The top four are good enough for next season, Hirst concludes.
