Sunday’s Copa del Rey award generates reactions in the athletic community.
This year’s King’s Cups at NM in athletics went to Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Amalie Iuel. In hindsight, both Karsten Warholm himself and Iuel have stated that they believe the former should have received the King’s Cup after the Norwegian Championship.
In an interview with Aftenposten after the decision, Warholm reacted to the jury’s choice.
– Yes, I question the choice of the jury, Karsten Warholm tells the newspaper.
Warholm was seeking his sixth consecutive royal trophy. But the jury found that Ingebrigtsen’s 3.33.94 in the 1500m was better than Warholm’s 48.23 in the 400m hurdles.
– For me, it’s really about the Copa del Rey.
Iuel came to TV 2 with his opinion that he thought Warholm was worthy of the King’s Cup.
– I’m serious. Karsten delivered a very strong race today. Your time today is a great achievement here. It’s a shame that he is being punished for running so fast early in the season. It seems less powerful than it really is. In that sense, I disagree a bit, but of course. Jakob ran a great race yesterday, so did he, Iuel tells TV 2.
Warholm explained his thoughts to Aftenposten.
– A NM gold hangs high, that’s why I pose, but for me it’s really about the King’s Cup. It obviously didn’t work out today, but at least I tried, says the hurdler.
Warholm also believed that he should be given a reason for the decision.
– Do you think you should have won the Copa del Rey?
– I don’t know at all, but I would like to know the reasons behind it. When Jakob and I work on knives as we do now and have done for the past few years, it is obvious that the jury has a difficult job.
Ketil Tømmernes is President of the Norwegian Athletics Association. He won’t give Warholm any justification, he tells Aftenposten.
– The decision has been made in accordance with the regulations. It states that performance is evaluated and that the decision is made on the basis of performance evaluation and on the basis of judgment.
Henrik Ingebrigtsen: – Humble statement
On Sunday evening, older brother Henrik Ingebrigtsen took to Instagram to respond to Warholm’s remarks.
Ingebrigtsen published a post that should be construed as a stab in Warholm’s direction.
“Humble statement,” writes Henrik Ingebrigtsen of a screenshot from the aforementioned Aftenposten case in which Warholm comments on the jury’s choice.
The competition was between Warholm and Ingebrigtsen. The cup winner himself was surprised that it was him.
– It’s great, it’s not anyone you compare yourself to. It’s great to be honored that way. As a long-distance runner, it’s unfortunately not something you think about much.
– It is not the case that we compare our achievements, we work for the same goal and we are lucky to work together without competing with each other. It’s great to have more athletes assert themselves so hard. It’s very motivating, Ingebrigtsen tells NTB.
Later on Sunday, the middle brother Filip Ingebrigtsen also posted a message. Attach the justification for the text and the time Jakob ran his 1500 meters on Saturday.
Henrik Ingebrigtsen’s manager Daniel Wessfeldt tells Nettavisen that he doesn’t want to say too much about his client’s statements on Sunday.
– I haven’t spoken to Henrik today. It is not something I want to get involved in and comment on. I’m doing the administrative part for Henrik. I don’t care who wins the King’s Cup or not. I don’t care if they have different opinions, he tells Nettavisen
Jakob Ingebrigtsen also took NM gold in the 800 meters.
Henrik Ingebrigtsen has not yet responded to Nettavisen’s inquiries.
