Hurtigruten is reduced to two ships

Hurtigruten will operate the Bergen-Kirkenes route with just two ships, initially until October. Coronary restrictions give very few travelers.

The cuts are being made in consultation with the Ministry of Transport and Communications, writes NRK.

There are five ships in traffic today. The ships that will continue to operate the route are MS Kong Harald and MS Polarlys. The ships MS Richard With, MS Trollfjord, MS Midnatsol and MS Nordlys are decommissioned upon arrival in Bergen.

With two ships on the route, the 34 ports along the route will be called every five and six days.

– We cannot sail with almost empty ships. Therefore, we, like other transport players, must reduce capacity, says press manager Øystein Knoph at Hurtigruten.

He adds that sadly, this means they won’t get as many employees on the job this fall as planned. In August, the company stated that their original plan was to bring all eleven ships back into service by the end of September, but at that time they had considered that they would not sail with more than six ships.
