The death opens the door for President Donald Trump to appoint a new Supreme Court Justice to replace Ginsburg, who was considered one of the court’s four liberal justices. She was appointed by Bill Clinton in 1993.

If Trump replaces Ginsburg before the election, the conservative majority in court is likely to become even stronger.

Today, there are five judges who consider themselves conservative and four who consider themselves liberal. During his presidency, Trump has already appointed two conservative judges, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh.

Just days before his passing, Ginsburg issued a statement to his granddaughter Clara Spera, urging Trump not to appoint a new judge before the election.

“My most ardent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is sworn in,” the statement said, according to NPR.
