A devastating investigative report on the “Roald Amundsen” outbreak was released Thursday.
– Research shows that they have made serious mistakes in infection control work at Hurtigruten, Erna Solberg tells NRK.
The report indicates that the company, among other things, has violated quarantine rules and has not followed up on suspicion of infection.
– They created an infection control system that should be able to work, but they should have followed it too, says Solberg.
– The Minister of Health and I said from the beginning that what happened in Hurtigruten was reprehensible. So it’s okay for them to clean up and ask for forgiveness, because it has required a lot of resources that haven’t followed the rules.
Trade and Industry Minister Iselin Nybø (V) also believes that Hurtigruten has significant potential for improvement and that its reputation is currently in strong winds.
– Right now it is clear that they do not have such a high price, but it is a strong brand and they have ambitions to stand out. Time will tell how they turn out, he says.
More expected from Hurtigruten
When asked if politicians should follow better, the Prime Minister says she assumes that companies that receive an operating license during the pandemic follow infection control rules.
– We can’t run and take care of everyone, says Solberg.
However, she doesn’t think Hurtigruten’s infection control requirements need to be stricter, they just have to follow the rules that exist.
– If they follow the infection control rules, they have a good regimen to prevent infection on their ships.
Q-top: will adjust the requirements for Hurtigruten
Although Hurtigruten is a private company, they receive several million crowns annually in support of the state. Therefore, the parliamentary representative Sandra Borch (Sp) will tighten the requirements for the company.
– We, as politicians, who allocate money to Hurtigruten, we also have to make demands now. We will set requirements for infection control guidelines, but we will also set requirements for Norwegian seafarers to work on these vessels, says Borch.
He’ll take care of this at the Storting.
– Should politicians pay more attention to prevent the situation?
– It is clear and the government also has a responsibility, but at the same time the report is devastating about breaches of trust. Hurtigruten has broken guidelines that they shouldn’t have broken, says Broch.
