In the last week, the municipality of Bergen has had an average of 32 infected per day. On Tuesday of last week, the municipality introduced additional infection control measures in the city.

Today’s figures are gratifying for municipal management. Since yesterday there have been 13 new cases of infection.

– We are happy that the infection rate is lower. It gives our employees a break, says Council Member Roger Valhammer.

This respite is welcomed by the municipal health authorities.

On Wednesday, Bergens Tidende wrote that in some cases the municipality has spent an entire week contacting close contacts of infected people, who should have been quarantined.

– The respite from today’s numbers coupled with the efforts of our employees means that we are almost up to speed on infection tracking work, Valhammer said Thursday.

PRESS CONFERENCE: Councilor Roger Valhammer and Medical Director Trond Egil Hansen spoke about the infection situation in Bergen on Thursday.

New notification system

At the same time, it tells about a new infection monitoring system that the municipality has acquired.

The system allows the infected person to register close contacts on this system. These can be notified again by text message, instead of the municipality staff having to call one by one.

– If there is an infection in a teacher, the entire step and parents of the cohorts in question can receive an SMS notification to be quarantined, says Valhammer about the system.

– This makes detective work easier, he says.

– Too early to notice a trend

The recent infection boom in Bergen has colored the city blood red on the map. The infection has spread to neighboring municipalities and other municipalities in the region.

However, if Bergen does attack the outbreak, it will be positive towards an autumn in which national public health authorities have predicted several such local outbreaks.

However, the municipality will not win the outbreak beforehand.

– It is too early to tell if it is a trend or just a random variation from day to day. We need a significant change to find a downtrend. Until then, we can’t be sure of the decline, says medical director Trond Egil Hansen.

Many gathered at Nygårdsparken on the first night of sponsor week.

STUDENTS: The outbreak in Bergen probably started among students. Among the 13 newly infected registered in the city, only two are students. Furthermore, two cases are import infections.

Possible normal pandemic situation next week

He says that the strict measures in Bergen may relax if the number of new infections remains low or drops even more in the coming days.

– In that case, it is possible that during the next week we will return to a normal pandemic situation, says Hansen, emphasizing that people should still keep their distances, stay home if they are sick and have good hand hygiene and coughing.

1,661 people were tested in Bergen on Wednesday. There are now free hours in the ER, too, and anyone who wants to get tested can do it that day, according to Valhammer.

– Finally, I want to thank everyone in Bergen for participating in the sprint that we have invited, says Valhammer.
