Adele Holberg (16) and Albiona Gashi (16) had a dramatic experience Wednesday when the school trip ended in a massive rescue operation.
First graders from Glemmen Senior Secondary School were on a canoe trip in Lyngholmen on the outskirts of Fredrikstad to get to know each other better when the weather suddenly changed.
For Fredrikstad Blad, who first mentioned the case, the 16-year-olds say they rowed from Mærrapanna when chaotic scenes emerged.
– It started to blow a lot and the waves got bigger and bigger. It was difficult to row as a group, so we were spread out. Then more people started turning around, Holberg tells Dagbladet, who was one of the students on the school trip.
Several students ended up in the water after capsizing.
– It ended up under the canoe
The 16-year-old experienced the incident as very chaotic and even lost control of the canoe.
– We walk the waves. I ended up under the canoe and panicked, Holberg tells Dagbladet.

She started looking for the friend she had paddled with and finally found her.
– But there was so much power that we lost both the canoe and the oars. There was no one near us either, but in the end we managed to see someone a little further away and we swam towards them, he explains.
While Holberg was in the water, she began filming herself. In the video, which you can see at the top of this case, you see how the girls are fighting the high waves.
– Scary
Holberg was wearing a life jacket and says she was in the water for ten to fifteen minutes before a lifeboat picked her up.
– It was scary and it surprised me, but I tried to stay calm, he says.
According to Holberg, she remained in the water for ten to fifteen minutes before being picked up by a lifeboat.
Both the police boat, the fire boat, the lifeboat and the volunteers assisted in the rescue operation.
According to the 16-year-old, there were a total of four or five canoes circling.
The canoe ended up on the side
His classmate Albiona Gashi (16) sat in one of the other canoes and managed to paddle to a small island when the weather changed.
– I was in the canoe with a friend, and we were in the back. We had to paddle against the waves and there were very big waves. The canoe ended up on the side and we couldn’t turn on the right path, but we continued to paddle forward as we called out for our master, Gashi tells Dagbladet.
The 16-year-old says they had to row far to get to the nearest island.
– A lot of water reached the canoe and there were big waves. The water was coming everywhere and it was scary. But we managed to stay calm, continue.

After a short time, everyone in the entourage was accounted for and no one was injured in the incident.
The 16-year-olds praise both the teachers who were on the trip and the rescue personnel who helped them.
On Wednesday afternoon they were at the Fredrikstad health center and examined by a doctor.
“We got dry clothes and help from a lot of nice people,” says Holberg.
– From being very quiet, he exploded a lot. The feedback I have received from our employees and students is that in less than a minute, a lot happened, Principal Pål André Ramberg from Glemmen Upper Secondary School told Dagbladet on Wednesday afternoon.
