Egan Bernal (23) retires from the Tour de France. Confirm Ineos grenadiers Wednesday.

Bernal totally collapsed on Sunday’s stage at the Grand Colombier. Also on Tuesday, he had to leave the favorite group early. After the stage, he explained why.

– I don’t want to use it as an excuse, but I have a great pain in my back. I asked for pain relievers because I was in too much pain. I also have pain in my knee, Bernal said.

Now choose to break the race.

– We have made this decision with Egan’s best interests in mind. He is a true champion who loves to race and has many Tourers ahead of him. At this point, it’s smarter to give up, says Ineos boss Dave Brailsford.

– This is not how I wanted the Tour de France to end, but I agree that the right conditions are taken into account. I have great respect for this race and I am looking forward to going back in the next few years, says Bernal.

The decision is likely to be a huge disappointment for both Ineos-Grenadiers and Bernal himself. In 2019, Bernal topped the Tour and became the youngest overall winner since 1909.

The prelude to this year’s edition was marked by a discussion about which of the team’s stars would have responsibility on the Tour, but ended with Bernal as captain and Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas being referred to the Vuelta a España and the Giro de Italy respectively.

All the team’s eggs were placed in the same basket, the goal was for Bernal to win for the second year in a row. There will be no reality.
