Duisburg 0-5 Borussia Dortmund

You probably knew what to expect, Duisburg’s Dominic Volkmer, when he fouled Erling Braut Haaland just outside the penalty area. The midfielder begged Robert Kampka for mercy, but the match leader was confident in his case. He thought Volkmer had deprived Haaland of an obvious scoring opportunity and pulled the red card from his chest pocket.

The free kick that followed pushed Thorgan Hazard over the wall and into the goal. The online acquaintance was Dortmund’s third on the night and in practice decided the match.

Anniversary celebrated with score

The first-round cup deal between the Bundesliga giants and the tier three team in German soccer was never very exciting.

In the 14th minute, the visitors got a penalty after a hand in the Duisburg field. Jadon Sancho, who played his 100th game for Dortmund, placed the ball in the left corner, while Leo Weinkauf went the other way.

Just before he spent half an hour in the local settlement, Dortmund rookie Jude Bellingham doubled the lead of the guests. A brilliant move by Hazard sent the Englishman alone with the Duisburg keeper. The 17-year-old shot through the goalie and into the goal.

With seven minutes remaining in the first half, things went from bad to worse. Volkmer had to use illegal means to stop Haaland, and Hazard added 3-0 for the visiting team.

Comeback celebrated with score

Right after the break, Haaland was back in center. Dortmund got a free kick when he was fouled 25 meters from goal. Giovanni Reyna’s attempted shot was deflected through Axel Witsel and into the goal behind an outscored Weinkauf.

It was as good as the last thing Haaland did in the first official game of the season. The Norwegian, who scored 16 goals in 18 games for Dortmund last season, shook his head as he was taken off the field in the 56th minute.

As he rowed to the bench, he could see Sancho take a free kick to replace Marco Reus. The Dortmund star has been out with injury since the beginning of February, but he was not wrong only with the Duisburg goalkeeper and put the final score at 5-0.

Dortmund coach Lucien Favre is probably happy about that. It was clear to him that Dortmund aims to win the cup this season. The last two seasons have stopped in the round of 16.
