On Tuesday, police found about 80 dead sheep on a farm in Mid-Troms. The sheep probably starved. Eleven other sheep had to be euthanized.

– We take it seriously, there is a long range with many dead sheep, says Police Superintendent Geir Lofthus in the Mid-Troms sheriff’s district.

The police are investigating violations of the Animal Welfare Act and questioning the farmer. Investigations are carried out on site and interrogations with neighbors.

Police were notified by a veterinarian on behalf of the Norwegian Food Safety Authority.

Possible violation of animal welfare

Lofthus doesn’t know what kind of errand the vet was on. If the animals have been grazing during the summer, you cannot say anything at this time. It will come out of the investigation.

– We have a criminal technician examining the barn. This is a relatively large use, but I still don’t have an overview of how many sheep there are in total, says Lofthus.

Lofthus will not explain whether it is an individual or a family that runs the farm in Mid-Troms.

It is a possible violation of the Animal Welfare Law that is being investigated. Every pet owner must provide food and care for the animals.

There are several animals on the farm and it is currently unknown what will happen to them in the future.
