Last night the Red Cross helped lower eleven sheep anchors from Ovaldsnuten. Red Cross

An entourage of eleven people and three dogs were trapped on the ground at Ovaldsnuten in Øvre Eidfjord on Saturday.

The area is about 1200 meters above sea level, and there was very bad weather in the area with wind, sleet, snow and low cloud cover in the afternoon hours on Saturday.

Just before 9 p.m., a local helicopter company picked up four people.

Demanding weather conditions

The last seven people on the tour, in addition to a companion, stayed on the mountain.

Tor Larssen Sekse, Action Leader of the Red Cross, took part in the action.

He says there was 10-15cm of snow in the mountains he was walking through, but probably even more where the hikers were on the mountainside.

– It was also very variable wind. Occasionally it was up to 15 m / s, and occasionally almost no wind. It’s a demanding climate to work with, but with trained crews and local celebrities, it’s safe.

Very bad weather for several trips.

Knut Johan Medhus, operational leader of the Eidfjord Red Cross, led the action in Ovaldsnuten on Saturday night. In total, the rescue team consisted of 19 people, both Red Cross crews and local celebrities.

– It started with obtaining a helicopter that took out the people who needed it most, says Knut Johan Medhus, operational leader of the Eidfjord Red Cross to BT.

After the first helicopter ride, darkness came and the weather had become so bad that the pilot was unable to make further trips.

– We tried to land the rescue helicopter again, but it was too risky, says Medhus.

They all went down on foot

Rescue teams finally managed to reach the mountain area on foot at 11.30pm on Saturday night.

Medhus says that the seven rock solid people had a new fire when the rescue teams arrived:

– Psyche and motivation increased considerably. It made a significant difference. We were afraid that not everyone could go down alone, but the whole gang could go down on foot.

– It fires in stoves

Just before 3 a.m. on Sunday night, the police were able to announce that the last hikers had found shelter inside cabins in Krokane.

– Stoves are fired on and everyone is physically unharmed, but tired and affected, yet the mood is good, police wrote on Twitter.

The tour group and the Red Cross will stay in the cabins until dawn and will move to Øvre Eidfjord in the early hours of Sunday.

– They are probably still sleeping there, says Medhus.

– He was exhausted while hunting sheep.

The tour party went out on Saturday collecting sheep when they got stuck in the mountains.

– They contacted each other at 7:17 p.m. and asked for help. They are very cold and wet and at least two of them are in poor physical condition at the moment, Hellesund said.

NRK has contacted one of the farmers on the harvest team. He was part of today’s meeting himself, but has come down the mountain.

– Some of the collectors were exhausted and did not recover. These are people who have been collecting all day and some of them have run out of power, he said.
