The man was on his first hike up the mountain when he came down from Galdhøpiggen and ran away from his hiking friends. After a freezing night in the high mountains, they found him alive this morning. He had sought refuge in a tent that he found in the dead of night.

In the photo that HRS Southern Norway has published, the rescuer extends his arm towards him that they have been looking for for many hours. It was the crew of a rescue helicopter that found the man in his 30s who escaped his entourage on a trip from Galdhøpiggen on Saturday afternoon. The search operation on the roof of Norway was the third of the night in the mountains of southern Norway. It also ended well.

The main rescue center received a GPS positioning of the missing man’s phone on Sunday morning, an area that rescue teams had previously been unable to reach due to bad weather, says operations manager Bård Einar Hoft in Innlandet Police District to VG.

– Rescue helicopter has managed to fly over the position. There they have made observations of the person that they have now picked up in the helicopter and are heading to Spiterstulen, says Hoft.

First mountain hike

The man will now be examined by health personnel. The man is conscious and apparently in good shape, police say.

– Found an abandoned tent where he used to spend the night. This was his first trip to the mountain, says rescue leader Vincent Roos in HRS South Norway.

The tour group of three had been on a day trip to Galdhøpiggen, when they parted ways on the way down and the man did not return to Spiterstulen. He was reported missing around 7:30 pm.

The man must have been ill-equipped for the night in the prevailing weather conditions and had no food, good clothing, or equipment. The climate of the area has been characterized by strong winds, rainfall and negative degrees.

At 0820 hours on Sunday, HRS Southern Norway stated that rescue helicopters had attempted to search the man in the area around the top of the mountain without success. The worst was feared.

Police tried to find the man with dog patrols and regular patrols. In addition, the search operation was carried out with an air ambulance, crews from the Red Cross and Norwegian Rescue Dogs.

Busy night

The night has been busy for rescue teams on the mountain: a total of 16 cold and wet people have been taken out in the three different rescue operations.

– It was unstable last night. Rain had been reported, but it was colder and the rain was coming in the form of snow. Then you will cool down quickly. Snow settles on clothing, says Tor Larssen Sekse at Eidfjord Red Cross.

He was part of the trampling team that climbed the group of sheep anchors who needed help last night in the Ovaldsnuten area.

The police received a message from the group of 14 people at 7:17 pm last night.

– They were well dressed, but the weather was very bad and they called for help, says operations manager Tatjana Kneppen at Police West.

The weather was too bad for the Air Ambulance to land in the mountains.

– The airlift, known locally, managed to land with a smaller helicopter and took out four people. It was not possible to get more. Those who remained were wet and cold and reported that they could not get down.

While the action was taking place to help the sheep to anchor, the emergency message came from a man who was weather resistant at Skåltjørna in Hardangervidda. It was reported shortly after midnight.

I went with the Red Cross

– He has a tent and a sleeping bag, but it is wet and cold, the West Police District reported.

– We have had a dialogue with the man since 7:00 p.m. He was on his way from Finse to a cabin on the Hardangervidda. But he was surprised by the weather and high water level in a river, so he didn’t make it to his destination, said operations manager E claim Hellesund.

The man had little food and it was snowing heavily when Eidfjord Red Cross teams objected to the man’s position.

Just before 06:30, the police reported that a rescue helicopter was heading from Florø, at the same time that ground crews were approaching the area.
Right after kl. 07 the Red Cross announced that the man was in good shape. He even went with a Red Cross to a lake. There he was picked up by boat and transported to the road.
