Western police report a rescue operation in Øvre Eidfjord. A group of tourists has had trouble on the Ovaldsnuten mountain in Hardanger.
The entourage of 11 people and three dogs were trapped on the ground about 1,200 meters above sea level, police said. Just after 9 p.m., a helicopter was able to retrieve four of them.
However, climatic conditions have made it very difficult to extract the latter. Flying back to the area is not justified at this time.
– It gets worse the more time passes. They are very relaxed and have been out all day. We are talking about people between the ages of 20 and 50. They have been collecting sheep, says the operations manager. E claim Hellesund in the western police district to Dagbladet.
Cold and wet
The weather is very bad in the area with strong winds, sleet, snow and low cloud cover. The temperature should be around zero degrees and people should be affected by bad weather. At least two of them must be in poor physical condition.
– We have an occasional dialogue on the phone with them. They have nowhere to seek shelter and have probably been surprised by a change in the weather. There are local people who are well known, Hellesund tells Dagbladet.
Red Cross on the way
The first helicopter that was dispatched to the site to pick up the tour group had to turn around on Saturday night, as weather conditions made it unjustifiable to enter the area. So it was a local helicopter company that finally got on and got the four who got off without a hitch.
On Saturday night, two Red Cross teams are also on their way, but it is more than two hours to walk to those who are trapped in the mountain. Norwegian rescue dogs have also been asked for help.
– We’re on our way now. It’s been bad weather here all day, says Eidfjord Red Cross leader Tore Tveit.
