Recent figures show that infection in the Bergen area continues to increase. The Bergen municipality invited a press conference on the status of the infection on Saturday.

In attendance were Council Member Roger Valhammer, Health Councilor Beate Husa, and Medical Director Trond Egil Hansen.

– When we have introduced stricter measures this week, it is based on assessments made by our professionals. Only after the speech came Tuesday morning did the professional councils change character, says Councilor Roger Valhammer, referring to Thursday’s press conference.

There may be more stringent measures

In the last week, Bergen has 220 new cases of infection. If the measures introduced in Bergen do not work, the municipality will introduce stricter measures in consultation with the National Institute of Public Health. In the current situation, especially infection tracking work takes time.

– We have cases where we have up to 50-60 close contacts, and cases where we don’t know who close contacts are, says the council leader who encourages people to keep track of who they are with, says Valhammer.

Compare the situation with spring.

– None of us want to go back to the extensive closing we had this spring. The current infection rate is the highest new infection rate recorded in one day in Bergen. 220 cases in a week is pretty strong when, by comparison, one had about 278 cases in the entire month of March, says Councilor Roger Valhammer.

Of the new cases, six people are over 60 years old.

– Today’s figures are high. This shows that the average age is clearly increasing. Four residents and a Gartnermarken employee are infected, we found out today, says health advisor Beate Husa, continuing:

– This underlines the seriousness. The infection has reached vulnerable groups, and the effort we are making together now is about showing solidarity with the vulnerable among us.

– Thanks to all who contribute, says Husa.

Head of department: – Now they are serious people

Medical specialist Trond Egil Hansen reported on how the virus is transmitted. He emphasized that the infection occurs mainly with recent symptoms.

– This means that one can get infected without noticing anything, because they only appear a few days later. There may also be some who have symptoms so mild that they are overlooked, he says.

It takes five to six days from infection to symptoms.

This has made it necessary to introduce the measures that we now have in Bergen.

Therefore, the infection can spread without the carrier being aware.

– The risk of infection is also higher in larger gatherings and, to a lesser extent, in shops, buses and railways, he says.

He stressed that there should be no question about professional advice.

– Helps to undermine the effect of measurements. It is legitimate to discuss measurements professionally. Now they are serious people.

New cases of infection

According to Helse Bergen, there are now a total of three crown patients admitted to Haukeland. Two of these test positive today, Saturday.

In addition, two hospital employees tested positive, so far a total of 21 employees have been diagnosed with the coronavirus.

In Askøy, the municipality reports that four new ones are infected.

– The four of them live in Askøy. Monitoring of the infection began immediately, leading to about 80 people now being quarantined, the municipality says in a press release.

Among these are three school classes at Træet School.

The route of infection is known and the risk of further infection should be low, according to the municipality.
