In June a German (43) was suspected of being behind Madeleine McCann’s disappearance and presumed death in 2007. He is incarcerated in Kiel and is currently serving a drug sentence. The man has previously been convicted of assault.
The German lived between 1995 and 2007 during periods on the Algarve coast, near the McCann family vacation spot. There he is guilty of various crimes, such as theft of hotels and vacation homes, as well as drug trafficking.
Hans Christian Wolters is the prosecutor in the case. According to Sky News, he is convinced that they are the correct author.
But he doesn’t have enough evidence to press charges.
“We haven’t found anything in the last three months that makes us think we have the wrong person, but the evidence we have now is the same as when we went to press in June,” he told Sky News.
– Secret basement found
– optimistic
He says they have received around 400 tips. In addition, Scotland Yard has received hundreds.
– We don’t have enough to press charges. But there are some tips that make us optimistic that the investigation will be successful.
It was after a man notified the police that the 43-year-old man confessed to Madeleine’s kidnapping that German, British and Portuguese police launched an investigation.
The suspect lived three miles away.
Police have not been able to find technical evidence linking the man to the kidnapping. They have carried out forensic investigations on two cars he used in Portugal, a dark Jaguar XJR 6 with a German registration and a Volkswagen T3 Westfalia with a Portuguese registration. The old vehicle transferred the man to someone else the day after McCann’s disappearance.
The prosecutor emphasizes that the police do not depend on technical evidence for a possible prosecution, but says they need more evidence. He can’t say exactly what they’re looking for, but points out that it could be a witness, a photo, or a video.
– Someone asked me if we had found Madeleine’s clothes. If we had found something like that it would have been great for research, but we haven’t.
Examining directions
Police have also conducted investigations in the German city of Hannover. Wolters won’t go into what they found there.
– We investigate all the places where you have lived. We know from the past that he has excavated things. In an earlier investigation, a USB was found on the ground. I cannot say what we have found now.
According to the daily Bild, the police have found a secret basement in Hannover.
The defender of the German, Friedrich Fulscher, thinks that the police have the wrong man. He has seen no police evidence against the client, to which he responds.
– It is a legal principle that both parties must have the same weapon. It’s time for her to show her cards, because she continues to publicly prejudge my client without giving her a chance to defend herself, she tells Sky News.
You are concerned about what happens if the client is never prosecuted or convicted in the case. The German has been identified by name and photo in various foreign media.
– You will not have the opportunity to live a normal life. Everyone wants to put it in the context of this case.
Convicted of rape
In 2005, the German broke into a villa in Praia da Luz and raped a 72-year-old widow. He was not convicted until 2019.
He was already a prisoner in Kiel.
According to Bild, the rape was revealed after the thieves found a video recording of the crime in the man’s home.
The 43-year-old man denied criminal guilt for the assault, but was killed when body hair found on the woman’s sheet turned out to be his.
The defender claims that the man who now claims that the 43-year-old woman confessed to the kidnapping is one of the two men who found the video material in the rape case.
Therefore, you doubt the credibility of the witness.
