Night until August 28
Johan Jacobus Kootte lost his life when a polar bear attacked his shop in Svalbard.
One person tried to shoot the polar bear to save Kootte’s life. The polar bear was later found dead in the airport parking lot.
Now the person is charged.
The investigation remains
– The person who shot the polar bear has the status of a defendant, and will also be assessed under the provisions of the emergency law, Lieutenant Governor Sølvi Elvedahl tells Nrk.no.
The person is charged with violating the Svalbard Environmental Protection Act, which states, among other things, that “No one should hunt, capture, injure or kill wildlife.”
An investigation is still pending before the tax authority decides whether to prosecute the person or to close the case.
– We have not yet received a response to the autopsy of the deceased. There will also be an investigation against the company, that is, the campsite. If the safety measures are sufficient in relation to the Work Environment Act, says Elvedahl.
As the deceased worked at the camp, the Norwegian Labor Inspection Authority is involved.
