– In the first instance, we have fired the students in step with the student who has been diagnosed with an infection, says Øyvind Opdal, deputy principal of Bryne Senior High School.

A student in the VG2 study specialization has been diagnosed with coronary artery disease. Therefore, the school chose on Tuesday morning to fire all students who are in the second year of this field of study.

Initiate infection control measures

On Tuesday afternoon, the school and Time Township issued a press release regarding the situation:

– On the advice of the municipal superior, we have decided that all classes meet as usual from Wednesday morning. All students should take a lunch break in the classroom, says principal Ingunn Folgerø.

The students who were sent home have gone to home school and not quarantined. But after meetings between the school and the municipal superior on Tuesday, it was decided that 23 students who have been in close contact with the infected student will be quarantined.

– All those in quarantine are contacted directly and given information on what to do, says Time Øystein Øgaard’s chief physician.

Students who do not present symptoms of contagion do not need to take the test, is the message of the municipal superior. Today there has been a great demand for the emergency airway service in Klepp and the corona telephone in Stavanger.

– If you do not have a covid-19 symptom, we ask that you do not call. It’s about making sure those with symptoms reach out over the phone, Ødegaard says.

Meeting with the municipal supervisor

On Tuesday morning there was a meeting between the school and the municipal chief of Time. The student with a proven infection has been at school Thursday and Friday without symptoms.

– We have talked about what we can do at school to prevent the spread. We will come out with more information continually.

The school is now removing chairs in the dining room so that there is a better distance between students. Hand washing procedures are stricter and classes have breaks to disperse students.

The school has received messages from students reporting that they feel unsafe and wonder what to do.

– We answer that students with symptoms should be evaluated. If they don’t have symptoms, they should come to school.

Residing in Stavanger

– We work with the monitoring of infections and with whom the student has been in contact, says the municipal chief.

The infected student is fine and it is unclear where she got the infection.

– We will probably not receive an answer to this until a few days later, says the municipal chief.

The student developed symptoms on Saturday. It is considered possible to infect another 48 hours before symptoms appear, so the infection can spread on Thursday and Friday of the previous week.

The student who has been diagnosed with an infection lives in Stavanger and rides the train to school.

– For people who have traveled by train both days, the same rules apply as for everyone else. If you feel the symptom, you need to test yourself.

Bryne High School is one of the largest in the country, with about 1,600 students and 350 employees.
