Here’s what Deputy Police Chief Håkon Skulstad tells TV 2.

Originally, the new national passports and ID cards were supposed to be ready in December 2016, but they have been postponed several times. Norway is currently one of three EU / EEA countries that have not introduced a national ID card, along with Iceland and Denmark.

– We cannot rule out that the corona pandemic that affects the entire society may also affect the launch time of the DNI. In that case, we’ll get back to this, says Skulstad.

In Sweden and 18 other countries, they introduced the new identification documents 11 years ago.

Last year, the estimated cost of the project had increased by NOK 70 million to NOK 620 million, in addition to the construction investments of NOK 120 million.

The reason politicians decided to introduce the new passports and ID cards is that today it is too easy to operate under a false identity in Norway.
