The number of students who have received COVID-19 after the start of the semester in Bergen this fall, surpassed 200 on Monday.

One of them is Jonas Ellingsen Næsse (22) from Bømlo. You are studying at the University of Bergen and have had a slightly different start to the semester than you may have seen.

– He was probably fully infected by the end of the sponsor’s week. But I had no symptoms. I realized I had to put myself to the test after receiving a photo from someone I was with during sponsorship week, Næsse tells NRK.

As of Monday afternoon, the number of infections at the University of Bergen is 29, four of which were diagnosed today.

I had a good stay

The 22-year-old meets NRK outside the so-called corona hotel in Danmarks plass. It is an offer from the municipality to those infected, but who do not have adequate places to isolate themselves. The hotel opened in early June, but remained empty until July 19. After that, the demand has been great.

Næsse lives in a collective with students from five other study cities and was therefore told to register there after receiving a positive response to the corona test.

In total, he stayed at the hotel for a week, before going out again after three negative attempts.

– I was not very afraid when I caught it, but it is nice to feel that one is taken care of if something happens. It was obviously stupid to be told I had a crown, says Næsse.

Inside the hotel there are nurses who check the infected several times a day. Otherwise, those who live there have to measure their temperature and heart rate every day, says Næsse.

On Monday, 104 people live in the hotel, the Bergen municipality told NRK.

The municipality is now working to expand capacity and is also in negotiations to open a new corona hotel.

393 infection in one month

The first meetings of the sponsor week begin on August 10. The next day, the first participant received a positive test result.

This led the University of Bergen to cancel the evening events during sponsor week. Vestland University College canceled its sponsorship week after a few days.

But the outbreak at NHH has again seen an increase in the number of infections.

A total of 363 people have tested positive for corona since August 11:

  • 202 of them are students.
  • 131 of them study at NHH.

This means that a third of the total 986 infection cases in Bergen occurred after the weeks of sponsorship.

As of Monday, the Bergen Municipality has said the infection has been linked to the city’s student community. There are now several cases where the infection cannot be traced to the outbreak among students.

I tried to follow the rules

Næsse admits that the students could have done better, but that they tried their best to follow the FHI rules.

– The university could not have done much better, without canceling everything. But then there was a private agreement in the sponsoring groups, Næsse said.

He says it’s easy to be wise later.

– You are a new student, maybe new to the city and then you also want to meet those with whom you are going to study. It’s not that much fun starting a new school year without meeting someone, so I wouldn’t have directed as much criticism at students, he says.
