Trade plants like never before

There are many who have experienced pulling out some new family members a bit. green the battle since the pandemic hit us in March.

Potted plants of all colors, shapes and sizes have made their entrance into Norwegian homes.

A quick chat with several of the larger nurseries and plant stores shows that people have bought plants like never before, after we were told to stay home as much as possible.

– Interest in flowers and plants, and especially green plants, has skyrocketed. In a few weeks, we have almost doubled sales of green plants compared to last year, says Mester Grønn’s purchasing director, Anne Katrine Gangstad of Dagbladet.

New customer group

Gangstad says that in addition to noticing an overall increase in all of its customer groups, they have also experienced that an entirely new group has made the journey within their doors.

– Well-informed and interested young men enter. Often they know more than even the most knowledgeable employees about special varieties of green plants, for example.

Hageland and Plantasjen also confirm the growing trend towards Dagbladet.

They had a 25 percent sales increase in the second quarter of this year, compared to the same period last year. Vibeke Næss, press contact for Plantasjen says the trend with plants has been around for a while.

– The growing interest in flowers and plants, and in growing them yourself, has intensified during the pandemic. We’ve been more at home and invested in making it enjoyable both inside and out during the pandemic, and planting or growing our own veggies is something everyone enjoys.

Gardener Morten Bragdø has also experienced that turnover increased this spring. He comes from a family with many plant enthusiasts and is the fourth generation of the family to work as a gardener, after his great-grandfather bought the farm in 1914.

Together with his wife, children and sons-in-law, they run the godvår.no online store and a partner garden center. But the high demand this spring has made it difficult to meet demand in both places.

– Unbelievably, we closed the garden center in May and will not be opening it again this year. There are so many ordering products from us online that we must prioritize shipping those products.

Bragdø, who is also known for the Plantepodden podcast along with Belinda Jakobsen, says they have been in huge demand on the online store.

– We have seven times our turnover so far this year. We ship throughout the country, so we receive between 200 and 250 orders daily. It is quite clear that people have a need to control and take care of the things around them.

In their store, they mainly sell outdoor plants and not necessarily green plants or other potted plants for the living room.

He says the increased demand indicates that people have had more time to devote to other hobbies, like having a little fun at home and in the garden, as a result of the crown.
