1.6 million asked to evacuate in Japan

Typhoon Haishen sent heavy rain and gusts of wind over southern Japan on Sunday as it approached the island of Kyushu, requesting the evacuation of 1.6 million.

Among the 1.6 million who have been asked to be evacuated from their homes are 730,000 residents in the city of Kumamoto, according to broadcaster NHK.

The typhoon has caused the cancellation of 555 flights scheduled for Monday. Several train departures in the region have also been canceled.

Almost 40,000 households were without power in Kyushu and the island of Okinawa.

Haishen is the second typhoon to hit Japan in a week, and the Meteorological Institute has determined that it could break records.
