Shock temperature in Finnmark: the warmest in the country

The Norwegian Meteorological Institute reports unusual heat in Finnmark on Saturday morning.

– Good morning East Finnmark! Today is where we have measured the three highest morning temperatures in the country, writes the Meteorological Institute on Twitter.

– It’s not every day Finnmark is the warmest place in the country, says on-call meteorologist Signe Alvarstein to Dagbladet.

Alvarstein says that it actually applies to four locations in Finnmark, but that the same temperature was measured at two of the locations. At Slettnes Lighthouse the morning temperature was 17 degrees, while at Berlevåg it was 16.3. In Mehamn and Nyrud, 15.4 degrees were measured in the morning hours of Saturday.

– It’s well above average. The normal temperature is eight degrees, Alvarstein tells Dagbladet, adding that the degrees will likely drop in the next few days.

State meteorologist Pernille Borander says that most of northern Norway receives some rain and scattered showers this weekend, especially in the northernmost areas.

Unstable weather

The entire country will be characterized by an unstable climate dominated by low pressure, rain and wind in the coming days.

However, it is western Norway that probably receives the most rainfall.

– It gets wet there. It’s actually a bit of fall to start there, with lots of rainy days in a row. Occasionally it’s windy and occasionally it can blow up a bit more. In the worst case, there can be up to 30 millimeters of precipitation in a day, Borander tells Dagbladet.

The only part of the country that may have residency possibilities is eastern Norway.

– It will be a little better there, as the climate comes from the west and eastern Norway is sheltered behind the mountains. There may be some drizzle and downpours, but Østafjells has the highest chance of the weather and the sun staying home, says Borander.

Start of fall

– So is summer over?

– In terms of timing, we are probably almost there, although the weather varies slightly from region to region. We have our own meteorological definition of what fall is, where the average daily temperature should be between 0 and 10 degrees, where it should also have a tendency to drop in temperature, says Borander.

– So in some places in the north it was already autumn meteorologically in August.

This makes it very special that the four warmest places in the country were measured in Finnmark on Saturday morning.
