She is one of many thousands of students the Bergen municipality asked this week to quarantine.

The loud call came as a result of the outbreak in the Bergen student community, where most of the infection is students at the Norwegian School of Management.

Student Kjerstin Bråten herself chose to be quarantined and was therefore forced to resign from the guards at the kindergarten where she works.

– I am a daily camper on student radio and therefore I am not dependent on the other job, but I think this creates challenges for many, he says.

You are not entitled to income

Student Michael Breien also chose to be quarantined. He is not among the students who have been to a party, but they still need to be very careful.

– I choose to go into self-quarantine because I spend a lot of time with someone who has been to a party this weekend, he says.

If you are in self-imposed quarantine, you are also not entitled to earned income. Breien says that he has two jobs and that they can both leave home. Therefore, you do not lose income.

– I work as an editor at the student radio in Bergen and as an IT help for students, he says.

With a full scholarship and loan, students now receive about 8,400 a month. Breien pays 6,400 in rent.

– I would make a different assessment of quarantining myself if I had no income, says Breien, who thinks that more people think the same way.

Difficult situation

Kjerstin Bråten also believes that some of the students will prioritize work.

– Quickly lose a few thousand crowns in ten days. It’s also not nice having to tell your employer that you can’t work, he says.

Bråten thinks that students should be honest if one has been to a party.

– Even if it’s a few people, not all infection control rules are enforced when you drink alcohol. It’s better to stay ahead of the curve, rather than have to shut down the entire workplace, she says.

Lacks clearer instructions

Breien believes that the municipality’s instructions should be clear.

– I’d rather have received a lawsuit, to be completely honest. In my work as a radio editor, I have received many questions from people wondering what the word party means and if they are happy to be home, he says.

The student leader from the University of Bergen also came out this week and criticized what she perceived as a generalization from students and unclear recommendations from the city council.

Breien says he would quickly lose all of his rent if he hadn’t been able to work.

– I don’t understand what people who have a part-time job should do if they are in quarantine without receiving any income. If it had been me, I couldn’t have stayed home, she says.
