BERGEN (VG) 111 NHH students have been confirmed infected with corona. – We are very sorry, says the leader of the student association for the violation of the guidelines.

– We believe, first of all, that this is very sad, and we take it very seriously, says Marthe-Caroline Dahle, leader of the Norwegian School of Management (NHHS) Student Association, single mother from the canteen.

On Thursday, 17 new students at the Norwegian School of Management (NHH) in Bergen were infected with corona. Thus, there are a total of 111 infected on campus.

The school has stopped all physical education and activities, with only a few students left in the reading room and in the group rooms.

– Here it tends to be full of life, but now it’s completely quiet here, says Dahle, as he walks the hallways.

The floors are marked with arrows and the beams are hung on chairs in the reading room.

– It’s terrifying to have the infection so close all of a sudden, says Dahle.

– We are very sorry

On Monday night of last week, the student association’s club and culture committee held an event in the basement of the school, which was originally to be alcohol-free and would last about an hour. That was not the case.

– We have clearly communicated that it is not allowed to party at NHH, but here they broke the guidelines. Alcohol was consumed in the room, they went to a house party, returned to school where they were expelled from the area by the responsible organizer, Dahle says.

Some of those who have now been diagnosed with infection at school were at this event. 45 students must have participated.

– We are very sorry that there has been a breach of the guidelines, and we are the ones in charge.

– What could have been done differently?

– There probably weren’t enough guards at the event, says Dahle.

On Monday of this week, the school management had a meeting with the student association, where they talked about the party.

– We think it is a shame, and we have raised it with the student association. They have apologized for everything, says NHH communications director Geir Mikalsen.

As the situation is now, it is extremely important to follow infection control rules and be careful with alcohol, says Mikalsen.

– When the student association considers reopening activities in the school, we will probably have a significantly higher participation.

– The stigma has arisen

Mikalsen emphasizes that the party that took place is one of the many cases in which the infection has flourished.

– It is clear that at this age, the infection occurs in certain groups. This incident is not entirely decisive for what is happening in the Bergen student community, but it is one of the starting points for the spread of the infection.

VG has been in contact with around 20 NHH students, infected and uninfected, but no one has wanted to say anything about the case. The student union leader believes there has been a stigma around positive tests.

– So you’ve somehow failed with infection control, you’re not involved, and you contribute to charity. But that is not true at all. We see that the infection spreads rapidly among young people and that many have no symptoms, making it an invisible enemy that we fight, says Dahle.

She thinks it is a good thing that so many students have been tested and that many are in self-quarantine, also self-imposed, so the outbreak can be stopped.

– I hope that in the next few days we will see the effects of having closed.

Health Minister Bent Høie told the government press conference on Tuesday that in recent weeks young people who go to parties and forget infection tips have received a lot of attention.

– It has led some to accuse young people of only thinking about themselves. But they don’t really do that, he said.

Mikalsen points out that the number of new cases of infection at school is roughly the same as in recent days.

– On the one hand, we feared that the numbers were even higher, since many students have evaluated themselves in recent days, including students who have no symptoms, but may be ill, says Mikalsen.

– On the other hand, our hope is, of course, that the number of new cases of infection will gradually decrease as student activities are closed. We are probably prepared for the fact that it may take some time before the number of new cases of infection decreases significantly.
