Nine people tested positive for corona in Sarpsborg on Tuesday, the Sarpsborg municipality writes in a press release Wednesday morning.
– Most date back to a religious event, writes the municipality, describing this as a major outbreak.
In recent days, 42 people from the same background in Sarpsborg and Fredrikstad have been diagnosed with corona. Among other things, this has led to extensive quarantine in kindergartens, schools and health institutions.
– We have a good collaboration with the leader of the religious network and we know that the environment is also taken seriously. Everyone who participated in the event has been quarantined. The same goes for several other close contacts. Therefore, we believe that we have some control over the situation, says the municipal chief, says Sarpsborg municipal chief Karianne Jenseg Bergmann in the press release.
Several hundred quarantined
Dagbladet has been in contact with municipal chief physician Hilde Skyvulstad, who is referring to infection control physician Karianne Bergman. Bergman tells Dagbladet that the infection dates back to celebrating a Muslim holiday last week.
– It was a celebration of several days, where we estimate that a total of 160 people were present, Bergman tells Dagbladet.
She doesn’t know where the infection came from prior to this. Bergman says he doesn’t have an overview of the number of people who are now quarantined as a result of the outbreak, in part because the guests came from different municipalities. In the press release, the municipality claims that several hundred people have been quarantined as a result of the outbreak.
– Everyone who was there must have been notified through their municipality or organizer, says Bergman.
– Do you expect more infected?
– There are already a good number of infected and we hope that there will be more in the coming days. Now everyone who participated in the celebration is in quarantine, so we have control over the group in question, but there may be more infected among the close contacts of the guests during the detection of the infection, says Bergman.
He has no information that anyone who has been diagnosed with the virus is seriously ill.

In the last 24 hours, 17 people have been diagnosed with the virus in Fredrikstad. The city’s mayor, Anne Kristine Nitter, tells NRK that the infection in the city has spread into two groups.
Among other things, there will be talk of a religious event in Sarpsborg where at least one person was infected with corona, as well as a family event in a large family last week.
– We take the situation seriously and should probably expect more cases of infection related to this event in the coming days. At the same time, we hope that through good infection screening we will prevent the outbreak from growing further, says Nitter.
Municipalities are now working closely on infection tracking to control the situation.
