Polestar 2 | Great start for one of Norway’s newest car brands

Polestar ranks fourth in an electric month.

2020 is the year of new car brands in Norway. One of them is Polestar, which is now in the process of delivering to customers who have been waiting a long time for their cars.

Polestar is a sister brand to Volvo. Service and repairs should also be done in the Volvo dealer network here at home. This is another reason that contributes to the fact that several thousand Norwegians have ordered the electric car 2.

In August, nearly 500 of them got their car. To be exact, this month 494 copies of Polestar 2 were registered. This gives the model a solid fourth place in this month’s registration statistics. Not bad for a newcomer!

Significant decrease

In August, new car sales fell overall, compared to last year. The Korona situation, financial uncertainty and delayed delivery of new cars to waiting customers are part of the explanation. At the same time, electric car sales are on the rise again and there is every indication that it will increase even more in the future.

In August, a total of 10,802 new passenger cars were sold, while the same month of 2019 was 12,073, which is reflected in figures from the Road Traffic Information Council (OFV).

So far this year, 79,798 new passenger cars have been sold, compared to 99,460 in the same period last year.

Buying millions of cars

– There is little evidence that electric cars are losing ground, should anyone claim it. Everything indicates that sales of fully electric cars will continue to increase. And now there are many new models on the stairs, says CEO Øyvind Solberg Thorsen at OFV.

– We also see that some electric cars are high on the sales list, although they are cars that cost close to a million. It is quite special and something new, and it shows that many are willing to spend a lot of money on a new car, not least on an electric car. We also have examples of cars that have been selling well over the years and produced with all powertrains. Now we see that the gasoline and diesel versions of these are gradually being phased out of the market and that it is electric cars that are at stake. 2020 and especially 2021 will be great years of the electric car. Maybe 2021 will be the last year without VAT on electric cars. This will affect the sale, Solberg Thorsen says in a press release.

High SUV sales

The trend for gasoline and diesel car sales is also clear: Sales have more than halved so far this year, and the trend is roughly the same for August in isolation. Gasoline and diesel cars have been largely replaced by cars with new powertrains.

Electric or semi-electric car sales account for about 80 percent of new car sales so far this year.

– SUVs have long been popular in Norway. This is still the case, and large and relatively expensive models sell well. While other countries in Europe are wrinkling their noses at increased demand for SUVs, our SUVs are on average cleaner than other countries. In Norway, it’s all about electric and hybrid SUVs, and this sets us apart from the rest, says Solberg Thorsen.

Polestar beat Volvo

In total, nearly half of SUV sales in August were electric cars, while rechargeable hybrids accounted for about a quarter.

Audi e-tron is Norway’s best-selling passenger car so far this year, it was also in August. Archrival Mercedes EQC has had a long wait for car delivery. This summer, however, many copies have arrived in Norway, thus finishing second in the EQC. In third place we find the traditional best-seller Volkswagen Golf, while the brand new Polestar 2 is in fourth place.

With that, Polestar is actually bigger than Volvo here at home in August, because they had to “settle” for 431 new cars registered this month.
