Three years ago, Karen Elene Thorsen (23) from Flekkefjord decided to create an Instagram account called “poor.student”. The Instagram account was then started completely anonymously, when Thorsen feared there would be a failure.
The purpose of the Instagram account is to share dinner tips for students in the form of, among other things, reasonably priced weekly menus.
However, it is safe to say that it was not a failure.
Today, “poor.student” has become a huge hit on Instagram with 228,000 followers, and has spawned the book “Poor Student – 20 Weekly Menus for Less Than 250 Crowns” and, more recently, a separate app called ” Hungry? ».
Earlier this week, Thorsen announced on Instagram that the app had received more than 40,000 downloads, just a week after launch.
Thorsen also took home the “Influencer of the Year” award at the Vixen Awards last year.
It went from 50,000 to millions of income
Income has also changed for Thorsen, who three years ago barely had money for food.
According to tax figures dredged by Dagens Næringsliv, the influencer earned just under NOK 2.5 million before taxes last year, which is in contrast to 2018, when it was listed with an income of NOK 50,000.
Half of the revenue comes from the previous book, which according to VG was the best-selling cookbook in August of last year. Thorsen reveals to DN that a total of 60,000 copies of the cookbook have been sold.
In addition, he explains that the rest of last year’s annual salary comes from the series he makes with VGTV, conferences and commercial collaborations on Instagram.
Eat for 300 kronor a week: – Five tips
Thorsen points out to DN that half of the annual salary for 2020 goes directly to Sulten AS.
– I want to invest everything I can in this, and I hope that Hunger will be my workplace and that of many others for decades to come, he tells the newspaper.
He also admits that part of the money has been spent on buying his own apartment.
Karen Elene Thorsen has so far not answered Dagbladet’s question.
– The name is ironic
Since his Instagram career took off, the popular influencer has been written up and down. Thorsen had already told Dagbladet how it all started.
He had moved from home to study and wanted to live as cheaply as possible in view of future travel plans. When it took him a while to get a job in addition to his studies, he found he had to save in other ways. Therefore, he followed his food budget.
Spend 300 a week on food: – He broke the code
– I finally managed to crack a code that allowed me to eat healthy, well and cheaply, says Thorsen, who spends between 300 and 400 crowns a week on food today, told Dagbladet in 2019.
– I only buy once a week. If I go to the store multiple times, I can’t stay on budget, he continued.
Their menu consists of food made with the least amount of food possible. The goal is variety. Thorsen doesn’t like to eat the same thing for dinner several days in a row.
– I try to be creative with the food that is left over. Yesterday’s tomato soup will make a good spaghetti bolognese, lasagna, or pizza sauce today, he added.
