The Swedish department store chain has decided to implement a reduction in the Ikea Sørlandet department store in Sørlandsparken, on the outskirts of Kristiansand.

– Although it has been a difficult decision, we believe that the restructuring is necessary to cover as many jobs as possible in the long term, adapt to customer needs and ensure sustainable operations for Ikea Sørlandet, says the CEO of Ikea Norway by Clare Rodger in a press release.

In total, the reduction will affect 45 employees, Ikea’s press contact informs E24. In all, 16 of the 156 man-years will be lost.

– The measures we are introducing now will have significant consequences for our employees and are not something we take lightly, Warehouse Manager Beate Grov Hagen says in a statement.

– As a company based on values, it is important for us to take care of each individual employee in the best possible way throughout the process and a good collaboration with the union delegates and the security service is absolutely essential to achieve this, he continues.

Ikea’s press office emphasizes to E24 that no reduction is planned for other department stores.

The downsizing at Ikea Sørlandet comes after department stores have run a deficit for the past eight years due to high costs, according to Fædrelandsvennen, who first mentioned the case.

The chain claims that for several years they have tried to improve profits and reduce costs, but that unfortunately it has not been enough.

The changes will take effect in early 2021, Ikea states in the announcement.
