The 45-year-old has a good chance of becoming the Labor Party’s first candidate in next year’s parliamentary elections.

Just over a year before the election, the local team from Bergen and all of Sunnhordland have her on top. The same applies to unions.

Motivated by trust

– I think I’m very nice. I really appreciated that confidence, says Persen.

– You want to sit in the Storting?

– It’s ready. Confidence is a great motivation. Also, I think Norway needs a new government and a new political direction. This spring has shown us how much wellness means, in addition to having an active business policy. So I’m ready to do a job if the party wants it.

Persen, who joined the Labor Party in 2008 after several years as a Rød Valallianse city council representative, says he is confident he will represent the entire county well in parliament, and not just Bergen.

– I have been our local politician since 2003 and I know the entire county very well, he says.

– The Persians have wide support

Roald Aga Haug from Ullensvang, Odd Harald Hovland from Bømlo and AUF leader Benjamin Jacobsen have also been highly nominated by local law, in addition to new MPs Ruth Grung and Eigil Knutsen.

In Nordhordland, the home team proposes Øyvind Oddekalv.

– We note that many of the local teams have Mjøs Persen at the helm and that he has broad support. Of course, we must take this into account when compiling the final list, says nominations committee chair Marianne Sandahl Bjorøy.

Bakervik can ascend

Already in the distribution of positions in the politics of the city after the elections, the Labor Party worried that the mayor could end up in the Storting, securing the post of deputy mayor.

Therefore, everything indicates that Deputy Mayor Rune Bakervik will be the new mayor if Marte Mjøs Persen becomes a parliamentary representative.

Bakervik lost the battle to Roger Valhammer to host the candidate for Labor Party city council leader ahead of the 2019 municipal elections.

The two main candidates in the previous elections, Jette Christensen and Magne Rommetveit, have announced that they will not stand for re-election to the Storting.

– It is not surprising

The next step in the process is for the nominating committee to make a full proposal for a list that will be consulted in local law.

The leader of the Labor Party in Bergen, Geir-Steinar Dale, is not surprised by the broad support the mayor also receives outside of Bergen.

– Has very good contact in the county and in the union movement. A skillful, hard-working politician who has demonstrated his commitment to the entire county, Dale says.

– Will Bergen require Mjøs Persen in 1st place?

– We have recorded her and we are clear that we think she is a good candidate. Then it is the county nominating committee that will decide.
