On Monday afternoon, Councilor Roger Valhammer in the Bergen municipality stated that they feel compelled to take further measures to prevent the spread of covid-19. The spread of the infection is particularly related to the outbreaks in the student communities of the municipality.
Therefore, the municipality chooses to recommend students who have participated in student parties to enter self-imposed quarantine for ten days.
– Lately it has been very demanding to keep track of infections in Bergen. We’ve gotten to the point where we’ve had to consult on this and come up with a general recommendation for students and people who may have been in meetings with them for the past ten days, says infection control doctor Karina Koller Løland.
Increased pressure from infection
In Bergen, the infection pressure is at least 54.8 infected per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days. In comparison, the National Institute of Public Health recommends including in the red list countries that exceed 20 infected per 100,000 inhabitants.
Even before the weekend, the number of infections exceeded 30 infected per 100,000 inhabitants in Bergen. However, the Norwegian Institute of Public Health decided not to recommend the use of face masks because the outbreak appeared to be limited and the pressure of infection did not appear to be increasing in the population.
Medical Director Trond Egil Hansen stated that the Bergen Municipality still sees no reason to recommend the use of masks on public transport when it is not possible to maintain a sufficient distance.
– The infection has spread to parties. They seem to be together in a very special way this holiday season with close face-to-face contact, Hansen says.

Outbreak
A total of 58 students have been infected in connection with an outbreak at the Norwegian School of Management (NHH). This weekend, at least 43 new cases related to the outbreak were registered. On Monday, communications director Geir Mikalsen told Bergens Tidende that the school will cancel all physical education until further notice.
Dagbladet has been unable to obtain a comment on the infection situation in Bergen from the National Institute of Public Health.
Before the weekend
On Wednesday, the municipality of Bergen rejected in a press release that they could be considered a red area. Among other things, this was justified by the fact that the proportion of positive tests was less than five percent.
– Of the total number that have been tested, only a small proportion turn out to be positive. The proportion of positive samples must exceed five percent of the total number of tests in the municipality for us to become a red area. In addition, we will have more than 20 new cases of infection for every 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days. Then it will be a general assessment that will have FHI assess an area as red or not, said infection control chief Løland.
A few days in advance, the Bergen municipality decided to notify people who had stayed at selected nightclubs at selected times so that they would pay more attention to the symptoms of covid-19. This happened as a result of an outburst associated with a sponsoring group.
