– We have a great job to do with building a good and safe party culture. Being part of the Labor Party should be safe in all contexts, Stenseng tells NTB.
She believes that a lot has been done in the fight against sexual harassment in the last two to three years, both formally and at work to establish better guidelines and routines for leaders at all levels.
– I’m glad people say no. Education and insecurity do not belong to the Labor Party. All of this helps put a stronger focus, so we can really get rid of the culture.
A very dramatic week in the Trøndelag Labor Party ended with Ingvild Kjerkol (45) from Stjørdal being elected the new county leader on Saturday. It happened after former Labor MP Trond Giske was ousted.
“Burning Tom”
The discussion about culture and internal conflicts weighed heavily on the annual meeting, described by one delegate as a place of fire. Trondheim Mayor Rita Ottervik thought the county party had reached “zero point.”
In the days after Giske was unanimously nominated as county leader last Monday, several women came forward with forceful stories about the culture and unpleasant experiences in the party.

When the Labor Party leadership concluded its whistleblowing cases against Giske in 2018, the party opened up for him to rebuild trust and re-run for party positions.
– Has Giske’s work to rebuild trust at the local level hindered the metoo process in Trøndelag?
– The Trøndelag Labor Party should decide whether Giske was confident. The cases were handled in 2018. Whether he should get new posts was up to Trøndelag Ap. After a very demanding process for the Trøndelag Labor Party, which they have handled themselves, they have created a new board, Stenseng says on Sunday.

– Independent of people
The party secretary does not want to comment on whether the rejection of Giske facilitates the work of APS against sexual harassment.
– The work for a better party culture must continue with constant force, regardless of Trond Giske and the leadership positions at Trøndelag Ap.
The task for the next few years is to make sure that stories about culture are the exception and to prevent them from actually happening, according to the party secretary.
– The cases surrounding Trond Giske have generated much debate and commitment for two and a half years and will undoubtedly continue to be for some time. But this is independent of people. A good party culture should take care of everyone who needs to tell their story.
Ended up as leader : Ingvild Kjerkol elected new leader of Trøndelag Ap
Open conflict
However, the drama at Trøndelag Ap did not end with the shipwreck of Giske.
On Friday evening, the nominating committee presented a new recommendation with Marit Bjerkås at the helm. But shortly thereafter, various outlets reported that the chairman of the nominating committee, Arild Grande, had told the committee during Friday’s meetings that he had received information that there could be a warning against Kjerkol if she was nominated.
Many disagree: Open war in Trøndelag Ap
Grande said on Saturday that she could not endorse Kjerkol as leader, and Grande and Kjerkol ended up in open conflict from the rostrum at the annual meeting. Grande also announced “a thorough review of this with the party central.”
– If there are threats or accusations of possible warnings, it should not be used as arguments in a nominating committee. Rumors or accusations cannot be used as a basis in this process either. An election committee cannot process notifications, Stenseng tells NTB.
– When we have announced a “full review”, it is about the process in the nominating committee. If there are things that should be checked at Ingvild Kjerkol, I encourage you to notify them, so that it can be handled according to our guidelines.
