La Liga believes that the contract between Barcelona and Lionel Messi (33) is binding and that the Argentine’s termination clause is valid.

In a press release today, La Liga, the Spanish league association, makes clear that the release clause of 700 million euros (7.3 billion Norwegian crowns) still applies if a club is to pick up the Argentine now. .

At the same time, the league association makes it clear that they do not want to release Messi’s player license until the clause is fulfilled.

Several Spanish media have claimed that the expiration clause has expired and that the 33-year-old can go to a new club for free.

In the press release, La Liga writes that they want to clarify the following:

  • The player’s contract remains in force and the termination clause is valid if the player wishes to terminate the contract before the expiration date.
  • The League will not issue the player’s license and will approve a transfer until said clause has been paid.

The Catalan club has always claimed that Messi was bound by the contract, and now has the support of La Liga. The contract with Barcelona runs until next summer.

The League refers to the employment relationship of professional athletes.

When the Barcelona players attended the mandatory crown test this morning at the Ciutat Esportiva training center, Lionel Messi was not to be seen. Since he has not completed the test, he will not be able to compete in Monday’s training either.

Messi can be suspended and fined by the club, reports Sport.
