Arsenal-Liverpool 1-1 (5-4 on penalties)
Liverpool struggled for a long time against Arsenal’s newly created defensive wall in the Community Shield final, but Takumi Minamino’s first goal for the club ensured there was a penalty shoot-out.
The liberating goal came in the 74th minute and a long and sustained dominance of the current league champions, although there was not much difference in chances.
On the penalty shootout, Rhian Brewster became Liverpool’s culprit when he slammed the ball off the crossbar. The 20-year-old was replaced by Georginio Wijnaldum just two minutes before full time, presumably to take a penalty, but the result was not as desired for Jürgen Klopp. That despite the rest: Mohamed Salah, Fabinho, Minamino and Curtis Jones did the job.
Arsenal’s top four players, Reiss Nelson, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Cedric Soares and David Luiz, also set their penalties. Thus, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was able to decide on Arsenal, something that the top scorer undoubtedly did.
Honored deceased actor
Arsenal’s goal machine loves to play at Wembley. He scored two goals in the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City, before following up with two goals in the final against Chelsea. Victory there was sent to Community Shield against Premier League champion Liverpool.
There was a beautiful goal and also a hit on the decisive shot.
The captain’s contract with Arsenal expires after this season and he was naturally asked what happens there after the match.
– We’ll see it in the next few days. Today we take the trophy, that’s all. We are improving. There is still work to be done but I am very happy and it is an exciting time to be a player for Arsenal, Aubameyang told BT Sport after the match.
– Great games, great moments, great players. He has handled the pressure very well. He was fantastic in the FA Cup final and the same today, says Mikel Arteta, adding that they are “close” to a new contract.
Aubameyang celebrated the 1-0 goal by honoring the late actor Chadwick Boseman with his arms crossed over his chest, referring to “Wakanda Forever” from “Black Panther,” in which Boseman played the title role.
Masked went completely to Arsenal in
This isn’t the first time Target Hunter has referenced that movie. In the 3-0 win over Rennes in the Europa League in March 2019, he wore a “Black Panther” mask. Then, as a tribute to the homeland of Gabon.
Known method
Arsenal tried the same recipe as when they won 2-1 in the Premier League in July: Lie down deep, absorb the pressure, and take advantage of transfer and break opportunities to the best of your ability.
For a long time it seemed to work very well, but throughout the second part the idea went to the team that has only had a little more than a week of training before the new season.
– We deserved the draw and we could have scored more, but we didn’t. When you play against a formation like this you have to be very fresh in the last third of the court. You have to force it forward and create angles. The pace was not quite there, and today it was not enough, Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp tells BT Sport.
– I’m so happy. I knew the challenge we face today. Thanks to the players for their efforts and achievements. The bravery of the team was the most rewarding. How aggressive we were without the ball and overcoming the pressure on Liverpool. I knew we would suffer in the second round, says Arteta.
Liverpool have been a bit longer and had the first ball into the net, but Virgil van Dijk’s knowledge of the net was nullified for offside.
Beautiful attack
Then Arsenal took the lead towards the game. The first goal of the season was a gift from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
After a brilliant attack where Arsenal played from their own defense, the ball ended with Bukayo Saka on the right wing. Last season’s big reveal at Arsenal sent the ball across the field for Aubameyang, who screwed the ball very well into the opposite corner from the 16-meter edge.
The London side also came close to raising it 2-0 by Eddie Nketiah, before Liverpool took full control of the game.
The pressure got too great
Despite many good posts, there were no great chances before the break, but in the ten minutes of the second half, Sadio Mané was left alone with Arsenal’s Emiliano Martinéz, but the goalkeeper was great and stopped the Senegalese.
Perhaps it was Liverpool going further in the run-up to the season that made the difference, because in the end the pressure was too great.
Led by Mohamed Salah, Liverpool made their way to Arsenal’s then tight defense 16 minutes before the end. The ball landed on the feet of substitute Takumi Minamino, who kept a cool head and put the tie. Arsenal players shouted at Salah on the occasion, without listening to either the referee or the video team.
It was the first goal for the Japanese after the transfer from Red Bull Salzburg in January.
– It is very important and helps us a lot. Many things were very good, says Klopp.
The London team got up shortly after this, and the game faltered back and forth until regulation time ended.
