Violent riots in Malmö after the burning of the Koran

Sydvenskan reports that the demonstrations have died down overnight until Saturday night.

Some 300 people gathered at Amiralsgatan near Rosengård in Malmö after a group critical of Islam burned the Quran.

– The situation has turned into violent riots, spokesman Rickard Lundqvist told Aftonbladet on Saturday night.

The riots take place after the Koran was burned on the same day by the Danish far-right Stram Kurs party.

Lundqvist told SVT that the situation was not under control. The Swedish television channel further writes that bottles were thrown and fireworks were fired on the spot.

From night to Saturday, Sydsvenskan reported that the riots had escalated. Burning objects are thrown at the police.

So far, one person has been arrested and taken to the police station for questioning. According to Sydsvenskan, the police kidnapped several people during the night.

At 0230 AM, Amiralsgatan was able to reopen to traffic and the crowd had spread. Several bus stops along the highway were crushed by the riots.

Three people have been arrested

There has also been an incident at Stortorget in Malmö where three people were arrested after kicking the Quran.

As a result of these incidents, riots broke out in various locations in Malmö on Friday night. According to Aftonbladet, several cars have caught fire and it is burning in an underground garage.

– If all this is connected it is too early to say, says Lundqvist to the newspaper.

The situation is escalating

According to Expressen, the riots have been going on since 7 p.m. Friday. Several outraged protesters blocked several streets, lit fireworks and lit Bengali candles.

There must also have been another critical demonstration of Islam at Stortorget in Malmö where three people were arrested for incitement after kicking a Quran.

The police first saw it as a simple riot, but the situation has escalated overnight.

– The participants are quite violent towards the police, Lundqvist tells Expressen.

Fires in various places in the city

Several cars in various directions in Malmö have been set on fire overnight, including one car in an underground garage. Police cannot say anything about whether the fires are related to the riots, writes SVT.
