Some 300 people have gathered at Rosengård in Malmö to protest the burning of a Koran. Police say the situation is out of control.

– They have collected a large amount of debris that set fire. Our goal is, of course, to make sure this stops, says Rickard Lundqvist, Aftonbladet Police Press Officer.

Police first reported that they had the situation under control, but it has escalated overnight, according to the newspaper. Fireworks have been lit and objects have been thrown at the police. In addition, several cars have caught fire.

– We have a fire in the street where they took out rubble and started a fire. The situation has now turned into a violent uprising, says Lundqvist.

The press guard tells SVT that the police do not have the situation under control.

According to the police, the reason for the uprising is that the Koran was burned earlier that day in the Emilstorp industrial zone by representatives of the Danish far-right Stram Kurs party.

There must also have been another critical demonstration of Islam at Stortorget in Malmö where three people were arrested for incitement after kicking a Quran. These demonstrations are a reaction to the fact that the leader of the Stram Kurs party, Rasmus Paludans, refused to hold a celebration in Malmö on “Islamization in the Nordic countries”.
