At least 141,700 have chosen to leave their homes so far, disaster officials say.
“We have to wear masks and keep our physical distance at all times,” says police spokesperson Carlito Abriz, but adds that it is very difficult to meet the requirements when everyone is very stressed.
– We do the best we can.
Authorities have said they will only fill the facility to half its capacity and deliver masks to those not in attendance, and will try to keep the families together.
At the same time, there are many shelters in use as isolates for people suspected of being infected or sick with coronavirus, making the situation difficult.
Fortunately, the region where the storm has not hit one of the hardest hit areas when it comes to the corona eruption. The Philippines has so far recorded more than 11,800 cases of infection and 790 deaths from covid-19.
Residents are asked to prepare for floods and landslides, and local emergency teams are ready. A total of 20 provinces are expected to be affected.
