Major police action was needed at Shem in Vestfold and Telemark after the prisoners entrenched themselves in the prison. Police took control of the situation just before 5.30 p.m.
Police in the southeast wrote earlier Tuesday afternoon that 7-8 inmates at Sem prison had barricaded themselves. Police were on the scene with several patrols to control the situation and planned to take where the prisoners barricaded themselves.
– We have had nine patrols in the case. Neither the police nor the prisoners are injured, so overall this was not easy. There was no use of weapons, operations manager Øystein Eikedalen told VG at 17.40. They now have control of 8 inmates.
He says there were questions about whether prisoners should be transported from prison to police custody, but that they were determined to remain in prison.
– What happens next will go to prison, says Eikedalen about whether it will be a police case.
Jail manager Robert Holmsen stated that inmates have refused to be locked up due to a change in routine in dealing with food.
No one was held hostage during the entrenchment.
The Sem prison has 62 seats and a high level of security. Prison is for men only.
